Honor Flight is a national organization with local chapters and we are writing these letters to Veterans who will be participating in the 2025 Honor Flight of the Cape Fear Area.
Honor Flight of the Cape Fear Area honors WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam War era Veterans by taking them all-expenses-paid to Washington, DC for a day of remembrance and honor as they visit the memorials and monuments built in their honor. Additionally, we work to educate the public on the service provided by these men and women and give them an opportunity to express their gratitude.
Unbeknownst to the Veterans, their are letters and drawings collected from loved ones, friends, school kids, and the community that are given to the Veterans on the flight returning to Wilmington. This "Mail Call" is truly one of the most special parts of the entire day. The Veterans receive a stack of mail in an envelope for them to enjoy on the remainder of the flight or to tuck away and read at home as many find themselves with "Honor Flight Allergies" and are too emotional.
Your letter to the Veteran is a meaningful way to express your gratitude for their service and sacrifice.
Here is an example, but please use your own message or personalize this one -
Dear Veteran,
I hope you had a wonderful trip to Washington, DC! I am writing this a little in advance so I am hoping the weather was perfect - blue skies and not too warm.
Even though I don't know you, I can tell you with certainty that I appreciate you and all that you have done to serve our country. Where there is service there is sacrifice and I am sure if I had a chance to speak with you that I could learn about the true meaning of both.
One of my favorite parts about life are the people we meet directly or indirectly. I haven’t met you, but your service and journey today on Honor Flight have positively impacted me. I am very thankful for you!
With love and respect,
